Trip! – Cathy January 12, 2010

I’m traveling to the Philippines soon! I’m so anxious to go swimming, go shopping, eat fresh food, have mango smoothies with every meal, and most-importantly spend time with my family. It will surely be one of the best times of my life. I’m ecstatic!!!

One of my highlights will be going to Pagsanjan Falls. I first saw it on the travel channel with Samantha Brown a few years ago and knew I had to experience it myself. The trip starts with going up a river for about an hour in canoes that your guide paddles. On both sides of the river is lush, green, steep mountainside.  You can hear the waterfall in the distance, birds and monkeys jumping overhead. Then at the end, you transfer to rafts (pictured below) and get pulled underneath the falls. How fun!!!!

On a shopping front, the Philippines is land of the shopping malls. Huge ones. Every mall there is comparable to the Mall of America – picture 3+ stories high, and miles upon miles of retail space. They’re huge. They’re slogan is “No other mall comes close.” Geeze – but it’s true. Because of the immense temptation, I was thinking of making a shopping list so I don’t go overboard.

So far I’ve got:

– Black ballet flats

– Oversized cardigan

– Large light grey hobo bag

– Loose fitting cropped pants

I can’t’t deny that I’ll surely find some purchases that aren’t on this list. But at least I have a guide to focus on and won’t come home with hella Manila t-shirts that I blindly bought $2 per. =)

Cathy

I’ve been reading Diane Von Furstenberg’s autobiography so voraciously that I finished it in 3 work days. It’s such an entertaining and inspiring read that paints the image of a fabulous woman. In it, she talks about how she marks special moments in her life with buying herself jewelry. Notably every time she broke up with a boyfriend, reconfirming her promise to herself. Her positivity is ethereal and palpable throughout the pages.

Inspired, I found some gorgeous jewelry online that could perfectly mark a special occasion in my life.

Resolutions – Cathy January 5, 2010

New year, new resolutions. Every year I have the same 3 resolutions.

1. Learn a language. (Tagalog & Italian).

2. Be physically active every other day – at least.

3. Pay off my credit card.

It’s a new year, and I’m newly pumped to pull off all three. I love how despite broken past resolutions and false starts, the chiming in of a new year restores all confidence and strengthens optimism.

For sh**s and giggles, a plainly fun song to get you in the mood for the new year and all your goals.

Ciao,

Fashion Muse, Daphne Guinness – Cathy December 22, 2009

I recently came across an article on Daphne Guinness and I was taken aback by her highly influenced fashion background and unique style. She has such a strong personal flare for style and a seeming lack of desire to impress anyone but herself. From her punky two-toned hair to the haute couture shoes she walks in, she clearly makes anything she wears her own.

Style Quotes:

“I’m not using magazines as a reference point,” explains British heiress and movie producer Daphne Guinness, whose exceptional personal style first caught the attention of McQueen 10 years ago, when he spotted her striding across Leicester Square in his Givenchy orange-and-purple dragon robe in the middle of a freezing winter. “I thought, I have to meet that woman,” he recalls. Guinness became not only a close friend and client of the designer’s but also a stylistic muse. – Harpers Bazaar

“Celebrities almost never look good unless they are ‘out’ at something or other, while real fashion animals always look a little interesting, even if they are only going to Starbucks. Individuality will always exist,” she asserts. “It’s more that it has become very underground and doesn’t infiltrate the mainstream as much as it should, so you have to search it out, which is getting more difficult, but also more rewarding.” – Vogue UK

[Knowing one’s silhouette is] like having that baseline of scent that I cover up myself with. You know, I’ll have a baseline of clothes and then I’ll work up from that. During the day, it sort of develops. Then I’ll sometimes think, “Oh God, how did I do that?” But then I can never recreate it. – Style.com

“I grew up in an artists’ colony near Barcelona with Salvador DalÍ and the Surrealists, so my dress sense is very coloured by my youth. Everybody knew that DalÍ was the most crazy; you’d go to his house and he would have lobsters in his pool. Anything went, clothes-wise. You could wear whatever you wanted any time of day, so people would wear evening clothes at breakfast time, simple Catalan shoes and hats, lots of brightly coloured hippy kaftans, and a lot of French, tailored outfits.”  – Times Online UK

Easy Glove Project – Cathy December 11, 2009

Every day I wear my gloves on my way to work since my car is so cold in the winter. Up until our heater was fixed yesterday, it’s been so cold in the office I’d wear them all day long… =/ But as other 9-5’ers may know, it’s not that easy to type proficiently with big knit gloves on. The solution? Fingerless gloves! But since most fingerless gloves are basic, I’m suggesting this project Lara and I did years ago to spruce up the basic accessory. We used a seam ripper to take out the boring buttons the gloves came with and replaced them with cool buttons we found at the fabric store. Voila!

It’s super easy, anyone can do it, and your gloves now look awesome. When we did it, we put yellow stars on blue fingerless gloves from Nordstrom Rack.

Here are some other places you could buy them.

Lip Balm to Love – Cathy December 4, 2009

I’m really picky with my lip balm. I want something that I don’t have to stick my finger in (easy way to get sick during the cold/flu season!), unflavored to lightly flavored, not too glossy, and compact. I swear by vaseline, but I know it’s bad since it’s not natural, and is a byproduct of petroleum distillation. All things that don’t sound too good to put right on my mouth.

So I tried the much-advertised eos (Evolution of Smooth) lip balm I’ve been seeing. It sticks out on shelves with it’s dome shape. I was interested because it’s 95% organic, petrolatum & paraben free, and on sale =). I tried summer fruit, and am really a fan. The dome creates a great application shape,  it goes on smoothly, has a very light flavor, and is very sheer. It comes in three flavors (also honeysuckle honeydew, and sweet mint).

But, in comparison to vaseline it’s not AS moitsurizing. In comparison to chapstick it’s less waxy. And there’s no tingle if you enjoy that from Burt’s.

After I read Lara’s post on yoga mats, I couldn’t help but expand into a yoga inspired gift guide.

Starting with these yoga cookies…

ClosetCat: Yoga Cookies

To me the perfect yoga pant. Fitting at the top but loose all the way down the leg.

ClosetCat: Lululemon Wrap Pant

If you’d prefer to take lessons at home, try out these weekly posted videos by Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman. It’s $5 a week and purchased in 13 week installments. It seems like a fun gift to give a do-it-yourself possible yogi.

ClosetCat: Gaiam Weekly Yoga Club At Home

And I’ve got to ask, has anyone tried these yoga classes with their pets?

I don’t know about y’all, but if I wake up in the morning to a dark and damp outside it’s much harder for me to get dressed up beyond my boots – jeans – tee- pea coat uniform. But seeing how these ladies below worked it out in dank weather, it really encourages me to do the same. As Tim Gunn says, “If you want to dress to feel as though you never got out of bed, then don’t get out of bed.” Here’s to jumping out of bed and into that hot outfit you were saving for something. Today’s the day. =)

Great rain outfit.
