Halloween Improv – Shar November 1, 2009

It was Halloween this weekend!  Fun times…

Now of course, Halloween =  costumes!  It’s a fun tradition that I haven’t really observed in the past few years.  But, being on a college campus again, I got to see a wide range of craziness.  I know some people take this holiday very seriously and go all out in their outfits: beautiful witches, horrifying murder victims, scandalous devils, … and I saw Spongebob.  Haha…

However, I know some other people who are simply broke college students and can’t quite bring themselves to drop money on clothes they’ll probably only wear once.  Yes, I am one of these people.

And this is where improvisation comes in handy.

I looked at what clothes I already have and tried to see what I can conjure up without having to spend anything.  Since I own a lot of clubbing/urban stuff, I thought – the hell with it – I’ll just go as someone in a dance crew.  But, no, too regular.  Next, I tried to fashion a toga out of a long white pashmina I have, but it didn’t fold quite right.  Then I realized, I have all these other scarves, why not just wear them all and be a harem dancer?   So with a little creativity, voila! a costume:

(Forgive the Myspace-style picture, there was no one else around to take it.)

So, I invite you to take a 2nd look at your clothes – or the ones in our closets! – and see what new angles you might not have thought of and how else might you wear them.

Keep checking back for the debut of the website!  See how you can use our stuff to complement your stuff…  learn how to mix it up a little 🙂

To Peacock Or Not To Peacock – Lara October 17, 2009

Happy Saturday world!  I hope everyone’s weekend is going better than mine so far! But I won’t bore you with those silly details.  Instead let’s talk Halloween.

So there’s exactly two weeks until costumes must be made and candy must be bought.  I know it struck me as soon as my mother asked me to make the goody bags to hand out to kids (I like to do something extra and instead of giving kids a handful of random candies I like to package and seal goody bags to ensure that each child gets and equal amount. . I’m crazy I know.  But the kids really enjoy it when they see you give them a bag full of treats!) So searching for candy my mind raced to what I could possibly be.

On a previous outing with my friends we stopped by numerous costume shops and one costume that really caught my eye was the peacock:

How cute is that?!  It’s something about the feathers I just love it so much! (Note my first ever ClosetCat post was on feathers)  And if you click to view the costume you can see that the back feathers also can be pushed down into a longer skirt as well which looks ridiculously cute as well.  Ugh, cute overload sorry.  Too bad I had to put the costume down when I saw the price tag of $90 in the store.  Even though online the costume is only $70 I still can’t bring myself to pay that much for something I will wear for only a few hours one day a year.  😦

I did however find an alternate peacock costume at Target for only $40

This one is cute too, but the details that I fell in love with in the first peacock are missing here (i.e. the feather hat, the ability for the tail feathers to be up or down, etc.)  Also, this one is not available in the store so I would have to order it online.  Now I don’t mind ordering online, but the fact that it’s one size and the model looks super skinny makes me weary of the item.

Maybe I should stick to my fall back costume of Morton Salt Girl that I’ve always talked about but never got around to doing. . .

Decisions decisions!  What are you thinking of being this Halloween?

The boyfriend got a puppy!!! It’s his new family dog and it is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen! But don’t take my word for it, take a look for yourself.

ClosetCat friends, meet Chomper (like in land before time)! He’s a full lab and super affectionate.  Louis and I met up with the owner to view the pup yesterday and when he let me hold him, he showered me with kisses.  So adorable!  We couldn’t say no to taking him home so we picked him up right then and there.   In the car ride home he was very well behaved, first not so much with moving around and being excited being in a new car, but after he had sniffed around he just put his head down on my lap and knocked out for the remainder of the car ride.

So is it crazy that we already know his costume for Halloween?  First Louis said he’s a boy dog and boy dogs don’t dress up. Until I pitched him the idea of dressing Chomper like a dinosaur to match his name!  Then his tone changed.  Here’s a few I’ve found. .

This one is supposedly a “dragon” but it looks pretty dinosaur to me!  It’s from Petsmart. But it has the weird teeth on the top that I don’t really like.

Then there’s this one from Jake’s Dog House which I thought was really cute especially with the spots.  I just don’t know how much Chomper will grow from now until Halloween.  But I suppose that before I order him a costume I should consult with Louis.  That and go to some thrift shops and see if I can maybe find him a costume there.  I’m so excited! I’ve never had a puppy before and I think this is the closest I’m ever gonna get. . .
